Banda pionera del death metal en la zona de Nueva York, se caracteriza por ser de las primeras en hacer death metal con partes lentas, a diferencia de muchas de las bandas de Florida.

Ese sonido de bajos tonos y con groove es lo que ahora de llama slamming death metal, hermanado con  el brutal death metal, que pone el acento en la velocidad.

Afterbirth estuvo en actividad entre 1993 y 1995,  solamente grabó sendos demos en el ´93 y ´94. En 2013 se reunió a la par de la edición de Foeticidal Embryo Harvestation, un disco que compila los demos más algunos temas en vivo.

En 2013 la banda reformada grabó un demo, originalmente pensado para ser buscar discográfica interesada. Sin embargo el vocalista original Matt Duncan abandonó el proyecto y como legado se decidió editarlo de manera oficial.

Pese a esta pérdida, la banda dice seguir en actividad.
