Sin dar muchas explicaciones, el sitio oficial de la
Iglesia de satán recomienda una lista de películas. Sorprende la diversidad de la lista, la mayoría de serie B, muchas de culto, o sea no fueron reconocidas en su momento, y las exitosas o famosas por algún motivo no tienen un gran aprecio entre los cinéfilos serios.
De manera no muy clara, Peter H. Gilmore, encargado de la secta fundada por Anton Szandor LaVey habló del tema en una
entrevista. Según dice, el listado lo realizó Lavey en el libro The Church of satan, escrito por Blanche Barton, y publicado en 1990. Gilmour asegura: "creemos en satán tanto como dios" y trata de introducir al satanismos en una nueva corriente ecologista y "con otra manera de mirar el mundo". A ea su entender "como el universo nos es indiferente, resaltamos los extremos con los cuales podemos ver la vida".
Un ejemplo de las explicaciones: según Gilmour por ejemplo de Pennies from heaven habla de la tentación de tener dinero, el baile tap, "tan apasionado como nosotros adoramos a satán" y la necesidad de ver la realidad de otra manera. Eso es, a su entender, "muy inquietante", y de hecho mucho del cine y la literatura clásica hacen hincapié en las pasiones, los impulsos, las manías del ser humano, las cuales en algún momento lo llevan a medirlas con su capacidad de raciocinio.
